Solid Hardwood vs. Engineered Hardwood

The Two Different Kinds of Hardwood Flooring & What You Need to Know

The two most popular hardwood flooring types are solid hardwood flooring and engineered hardwood flooring. While both offer beauty, the flooring type you choose can dramatically impact your flooring cost, maintenance, and longevity.

Since solid wood flooring boards are milled from a single piece of wood, they do not do well in desert climates. The low humidity and lack of moisture can cause problems like warping, gaps, and even cracking.

Engineered hardwood boards, on the other hand, feature a multi-layer base topped with a layer of real hardwood. Its composition makes it the best hardwood flooring option for homes in the desert.

To ensure our customers receive the best results now and in the future, we only carry engineered hardwood options in our Las Vegas flooring showroom.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring FAQs

Find answers to some of our most commonly asked engineered hardwood flooring questions.

What is engineered hardwood?

Engineered hardwood flooring combines the natural beauty of solid hardwood with the strength and durability of processed wood. An engineered hardwood floor has several layers. On the surface is a thin layer of real, natural hardwood, made up of a combination of rough stock, plywood, or HDF. Underneath the surface are layers of material made by binding wood fibers with an adhesive to give a strong and flexible support to your flooring. A veneer is then glued on top, giving the look of classical floors with better resistance to heat, cold, and moisture.

Engineered hardwood provides an advantage over solid hardwood because of the ability to install in multiple areas of the home. Engineered hardwood is perfect for the Las Vegas area because it tolerates the heat and low humidity better than solid hardwood.

What are the pros and cons of hardwood flooring?

Pros:

  • Beauty & Style: Unmatched warmth, timeless look, enhances home value.
  • Durability: Lasts decades with proper care.
  • Easy to Clean: Low maintenance compared to carpets.
  • Good for Allergies: Dust and allergens don’t trap easily.

Cons:

  • Cost: More expensive than most floorings.
  • Scratches & Dents: Susceptible to damage from impacts.
  • Moisture Sensitive: Can warp or swell in areas with high moisture.
  • Noise: Can be louder than softer floorings like carpet.

Overall: Offers timeless beauty and durability, but consider your budget and moisture risks before investing.

What engineered hardwood flooring brand is best?

To choose the best engineered wood flooring, you must take some shopping considerations in mind, such as:

The veneer wear layer and finish – Ask yourself how important the veneer layer’s thickness is to you. This is the layer that will endure wear and tear such as walking, furniture weight, scratches, and more. Some products feature thin layers of veneer, while others offer 2-, 3-, 4-, or 6-millimeter veneers. If your home gets a lot of foot traffic, you may want to consider engineered flooring products with a thicker veneer as they can be refinished if damaged. Additionally, some engineered flooring options contain a protective finish that’s made of a naturally occurring compound called aluminum oxide, which makes them harder to scratch, but they usually cannot be refinished.

The core layer – The core layer is the material that the veneer sits upon, called plys. The more plys in an engineered wood floor, the less likely it is to cup, shrink, split, or expand.

The dimensions of your engineered flooring – Engineered wood flooring comes in a variety of widths. Most engineered wood floors are around 5 inches wide. Narrow planks give a room a formal or contemporary feel, while wide plank flooring gives a room a country, a colonial, or an old-world aesthetic. Most engineered wood flooring comes in random-length planks to give the installation a more hand-built look.

Based on the above shopping considerations, our recommendations for the best engineered hardwood flooring are:

  • L&M Hardwood
  • Shaw Engineered Hardwood
  • Mohawk Engineered Hardwood
  • California Classic Hardwood
  • Provenza

Engineered hardwood provides an advantage over solid hardwood because of the ability to install in multiple areas of the home. Engineered hardwood is perfect for the Las Vegas area because it tolerates the heat and low humidity better than solid hardwood.

What is the most affordable hardwood flooring?

There are many factors that play into hardwood flooring costs. We suggest going over these three items before settling on a type of wood and brand as they will impact the figure you may be expecting to pay:

  • The veneer wear layer and finish
  • The core layer
  • The dimensions of your engineered flooring

What should I know about the hardwood flooring installation process?

Before deciding on hardwood flooring, consider a few important factors that will affect the installation process.

location

The Location of the Hardwood Flooring

The location of your hardwood flooring basically falls into 3 categories:

On Grade – at ground level (Concrete)
Above Grade – any second level or higher
Below Grade – any floor below ground level, including basements or sunken living rooms

The construction of engineered hardwood gives it enhanced structural stability that allows it to be installed at any grade level.

moisture

The Moisture Level

If you are considering engineered hardwood flooring for wet areas, such as bathrooms and kitchens, where continuous moisture is expected, you might consider a product other than engineered hardwood.

Good alternatives include luxury waterproof vinyl and plank flooring or laminate wood flooring.

Can I wet mop my hardwood floor?

You should never wet mop, damp mop, or steam clean a hardwood floor. Moisture can permanently damage the wood’s surface. You can always use Bona hardwood floor cleaner. However, we don’t recommend using Bona polish.

How can I repair a chip in my floor?

For small chips and other damage, you can use color fill putty for repairs. Typically any area smaller than an inch in diameter is a good candidate for this simple repair. You may have to replace the plank if the damaged area is larger.
