So, you have decided to update your carpet flooring and took to the internet to find different options, colors, and more. Be prepared to see nylon and polyester (among others). These carpet choices are some of the most sought-after because of their durability, softness, and ability to withstand the most common household stains.

As you search for the perfect carpet, you may be surprised to discover some carpet fibers are made from recycled materials such as plastic drink bottles. If you are an environmentally-conscious consumer, that could be a great fit. Other carpet fibers are superior in terms of mold and mildew resistance.

Whether you are looking for a family-friendly or fur-baby-friendly fiber, we have you covered. This blog breaks down some of the most crucial must-knows for popular carpet fiber choices and features tips from the flooring industry veterans on our team.

Carpet Grades, Density, and Height

The #1 determining factor in any carpet purchase is durability. That’s because most consumers want a carpet that will look good after a decade has passed. Compared to polyester, most nylon carpets bounce back from life’s messes and heavy foot traffic a lot better. The exception to this is if the nylon fiber is low-grade. A high-grade polyester could outperform low-grade nylon.

Before you choose any carpet fiber, knowing the importance of carpet grades, density, and height is paramount.

Carpet Grades

Carpet “grades” are assigned to carpets by the manufacturer. Because there are dozens of varying grades of carpet to choose from, we will stick to the most important things to know about them.

Generally, there are three carpet grade tiers: low, medium, and high-end.

Low Carpets Grades

Carpets at the low tier may last 3 to 5 years at best. Face-weights are generally 22 ounces to 30 ounces.

Medium Carpet Grades

Carpets in the medium tier may last for 6 to 15 years. Face-weights range from 30 ounces to 40 ounces.

High Carpet Grades

Carpets in the high tier last 15-20 years or more. Face-weights range from 40 ounces to 100 ounces.

Flooring Fact: Most residential carpets weigh between 35 and 60 ounces and are in the medium to high carpet grades.

Carpet Density

The next thing to be aware of when comparing carpet fibers is carpet density (how close each fiber strand is to the other). A carpet with a higher density means it will show less evidence of foot traffic and matting (flat or dull-looking carpet). For these reasons, higher-density carpets get placed near home entrances and hallways.

Carpet Height

Carpet height refers to how long the fiber is from base to tip. The longer the carpet height, the more fragile it will be.

Nylon vs. Polyester Carpet

Nylon Carpet Composition

Nylon carpet is a man-made material dating back to the 1930s. It was an alternative material used in making women’s stockings. However, its comfortable and durable features soon made it a favorite flooring option. One barefoot on a nylon carpet’s smooth surface, and you will be surprised to discover that it is technically a type of plastic.

The Different Types of Nylon Carpets

Not all nylon carpets are created equal. Before you visit flooring showrooms around town, you must know the two main types of nylon and their differences, which may impact your expectations and comfort level.

Nylon 6,0 vs. Nylon 6,6

The two varieties of nylon carpets are nylon 6,0 and nylon 6,6. Just as with phone updates, nylon 6,6 is considered superior. It’s more durable than 6,0 and also gives off less static electricity.

The benefit of nylon 6,0? For the environmentally-conscious consumer, it is easier to recycle than nylon 6,6. Old nylon carpets are turned into new carpets or used in manufacturing wheel parts or parts for washing machines.
